Dear Editor,
I have struggled with bipolar disorder for a few months now and I have never come across a website like this. It touches base on just about everything I have been dealing with personally. Also I could give this website to some of my family members and they would be able to gain a better understanding of exactly how I was feeling. Many of my family members are uneducated about my bipolar disorder because we haven’t had the resources that would allow them to learn more about this illness. This knowledge is important in gaining a deeper understanding with health care concerning the kind of support such families need. Not only would I give this to my family members but my coworkers as well. I tend to be all over the place at times and it can be a little frustrating at times for them. I’ve been fired from plenty of jobs because I wouldn’t finish tasks on time and sometimes I would have problems with my coworkers. Individuals with bipolar disorder are at high risk for relationship dysfunction. Moreover, being aware of this illness is that much more important to me. If I could pass on one fact a day about this illness I would feel pretty good about myself.
On the other hand there was some stuff that I thought to be important that you didn’t talk about as much. Family members, friends, and coworkers all need to know what to do during a crisis. Crisis could happen at the most random and unexplained moments. Our peers should have some idea of what to do because it can be very scary situation. Those suffering with bipolar disorder should have a list of people they trust (close family or friends) who can be called incase of an emergency. You should also have the names and numbers of your psychologist and or psychiatrist along with your general practitioner. Also, you should keep a set of instructions and medications on you incase of an emergency, such as being in a manic state. Just taking these small steps can really ensure your safety and the people around you. It could also help others figure out how to help you get through your episode.
All in all, this website could open some ones eyes to a whole new world. Bipolar disorder isn’t a physical illness; it’s not something that you can see when you are looking at a person. Some people can hide it from others for a long time because they wont have any episodes. Bipolar Disorder affects men and women equally, as well as all races, ethnic groups, and socioeconomic classes. Bipolar disorder also cannot be prevented but there are warning signs you can look for. There is always someone who is out there to help you. This website is a great example, it can help a young person really find a more positive side of this illness. The message I get from this website is to not let others bring you down in life. We are so much better than that.
